Some characters arrive quietly.
Aelion didn’t.
From the moment I imagined a girl stranded alone on a boat and a man emerging from the sea beneath her, I knew there was something different about him. There was mystery there. Power. Danger. But underneath all of that, there was restraint… and also a tail.
Aelion is not just a love interest in Salt & Sand. He is a man carrying the weight of two worlds.
On the surface, he is intelligent, wealthy, and powerful — the owner of one of the most successful shipping companies in the world, a businessman who seems to always stay one step ahead. But beneath the surface lies something far older and far more dangerous. Aelion is a siren prince tied to the tides themselves, gifted with abilities connected to storms, currents, illusion, and the sea. He understands the ocean in a way no one else can, and that understanding helped build the empire he controls above water.
But power has always come with a price.
Emotionally, Aelion is deeply loyal and fiercely protective of the people he loves. He carries responsibility heavily, especially as the future ruler of the Mer kingdom, even though it was never a role he truly wanted for himself. There are expectations constantly pulling at him from every direction — his family, his kingdom, his bloodline, and the gifts he was born with. Because of that, parts of him are emotionally guarded, scarred by duty and by the pressure of constantly being needed by everyone around him.
And yet, despite all of that, there is something incredibly patient and gentle about the way he loves Sierra.
What makes their connection different is that Aelion never tries to make Sierra smaller. He does not control her. He does not silence her. He sees her strength long before she sees it herself. In many ways, he helps awaken the parts of Sierra that had been buried beneath years of pain, self-doubt, and emotional survival.
Their bond forms quickly, almost unnaturally, as though something greater than either of them had already begun pulling them together long before they fully understood why. The sea itself seems to recognize them before they recognize themselves.
But Aelion is not perfect.
He has secrets. He makes mistakes. He struggles between duty and desire, between protecting the woman he loves and protecting the kingdom tied to his bloodline. There are moments later in the story where those struggles create fractures neither of them are prepared for. Love does not erase conflict, and Aelion’s journey is just as much about accountability, growth, and sacrifice as it is about romance.
Still, at his core, Aelion represents something Sierra has never truly experienced before: consistency, protection, emotional safety, and a love that does not ask her to become less in order to deserve it.
And sometimes, that kind of love can feel just as terrifying as the ocean itself.
